Hello, my name is Gordon Childs from Bexley, Kent, UK. This website presents snippets from my family history archives which may be of interest to other researchers.
My main area of interest is in the Isle of Wight, a small island off the south coast of England where most of my ancestors came from or passed through.
My family names include BALLARD, CARLEY, CHILDS & LININGTON.
Photographs & Isle of Wight Photographers
One of my interests is identifying old family photographs and a few of my 'unknowns' are on show in my photo gallery in the hope that someone might recognise the subjects.
To help me and other
researchers date photographs more accurately, I am compiling a list of photographers
who were operating on the Isle of Wight c1850-1940.
The list was originally shown on this website, but has now been moved to its own dedicated website.
Marriage Witnesses, Obituaries, Birthdays and My Ancestor Names
Names of people who were closely associated with my ancestors, appearing as marriage witnesses, mourners at funerals or names in birthday books. They could be the names you are looking for!
The Island - places & people
Photos and snippets about Wroxall including village scenes, local events and past inhabitants.
Capt Henry LININGTON
One of the more illustrious characters in my family was Capt Henry LININGTON of Wroxall. Although a page about him can be reached via the My Family link above, click Capt Henry to go directly to it. There are several photos of him with other Islanders. See if you can spot anyone you know!
Edward COTTON
A Sergeant Major Edward COTTON from the Isle of Wight who became something of a hero at the Battle of Waterloo.
Useful Contacts
A list of a few of the many contacts and web sites I have found useful during my research.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my website, I hope you found something of interest. Please look in again as I am often adding new items of information. If you have any comments or suggestions for improvement, please e-mail me at:
